Jake Delhomme calls it quits after resurrecting his career with the Browns

A day after torching the Packers for 66 yards, Jake Delhomme has announced his retirement from the NFL.

“I’ve pretty much done everything there is to do – I’ve even been to a Super Bowl – and smoking Green Bay in a preseason game was just the icing on the cake. You want to go out on top and not everybody gets to but thankfully, I do.”

ESPN declined to have a press conference and the Browns held practice during the time of the announcement. But family and friends gathered in the equipment manager’s office as the long-time quarterback made his decision known. Jake mentioned going 6 for 7 against the Packers as one of the high points of a well-decorated career.

“That team is good, really good. They were one of the best defenses in the league last season and I had some success, yes, it did factor into the decision. When you lead your team against Charles Woodson and Clay Mathews and the like and you can come through for them when it really matters…that’s special.”

When asked if a return to football might be possible after just a few short weeks with the Browns, Delhomme said, “I think yesterday evening was my Swan Song.”
